Welcome to our September newsletter !

As we prepare for the upcoming Antarctic season, we’d like to share the latest news, events and opportunities from the SCAR community and beyond.

A risk assessment by the Antarctic Wildlife Health Network (AWHN), published earlier this month, predicts that the highly pathogenic Avian nfluenza will hit the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic Peninsula this season with devastating impacts on seabird and pinniped colonies throughout the region. SCAR, the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP), the Committee for Environment Protection (CEP) and the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) are concerned about the devastating impact it could have on the region’s unique wildlife. We love bringing researchers together and were delighted to follow the successful INSTANT conference with nearly 300 Antarctic scientists in Trieste. For those of you who have attended the XIII SCAR Biology Symposium in New Zealand in August, Antarctic Science warmly invites submissions to form a Special Collection of articles arising from the meeting and associated
workshops.

The SCAR EG-ABI group has announced a data visualisation competition aimed to share the impacts that climate change is having on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Not only can you win prizes, but your work could also be featured on social media platforms. The submission deadline is Friday, 17 November 2023. Additionally, don’t miss out on the SCAR EDI Action Group’s new monthly Twitter/X feature, offering insights into their work and other initiatives under the hashtag #SCAREDI.
